The two volumes, completed with a set of useful notes, have got the merit of introducing to the Italian readers the poetry of Allama Iqbal in its artistic beauty and in the deepness of his meaning, extraordinary modern.
However, before the translation of these two volumes, Prof. Salierno focuses his attention on the study of particular ghazals, publishing their integral translation with commentary. Worthy to be mentioned are his translation of two very important ghazals: Sikva Protest and Javab-I Sikva Answer to the Protest , written by Allama Iqbal respectively in and Salierno wrote an essay about them, published in , under the title of Protest and Answer to the Protest of Muhammad Iqbal.
In this essay, dedicated to Prof.
Bausani, there is also the translation of the poem Siqilliya, written by Iqbal in during his first travel in England, while passing by the island so rich of memories of the Past Islamic Civilization, which Iqbal remembers in an almost moving contrast between the greatness of the past and the misery of the present. I would like to quote briefly the last verses of Sikva in order to show all the beauty of Iqbal poetry translated in Italian by Prof.
In these two poems are clearly manifest both the poetic talent and the ability of a professional translator in a balanced synthesis between a faithful translation and a poetic and literary style. This is the reason why both Bang-I Dara and Bal-i Jibril in the Italian translation can be considered a very particular literary work, a kind of synthesis, a bridge between East and West and not only a simple translation.
Unfortunately the time at our disposition is too brief and for this reason I will quote only the translation of Ghazal n. La mia gioia? Donaci, prima, una vita eterna e senza presenza di morte. E vedrai gusto nuovo e passione nuova nel cuore instabile. Dacci una spina che possa pungerci il cuore per sempre, Dacci, o signore, un dolore che possa pungerci senza fine. Recently Prof.
Salierno concentrates his attention to the translation of Zarb-e Kaleem, The Verge of Moses, published by Iqbal in , which would have completed the Italian translation of the Kulliyyat-i Iqbal in Urdu. After having participated as a scholar to several international conferences hold respectively in the University of Lahore , Cordova , Gent and again Lahore , as President of Iqbal Foundation Europe he promotes and organizes the following conferences: -Two conferences in Milan respectively in and -A conference hold in Milan on 23 November dedicated to Muhammad Iqbal, National Poet of Pakistan and Modern IslamicThinker.
Worthy of mention is the translation of the volume Iqbal, written by Mustansir Mir and published by Iqbal Academy of Pakistan in This book is very easy to read and useful for everyone who wants to be introduced for the first time to the work and the personality of Muhammad Iqbal. Salierno wrote also several essays on the political though of Iqbal, underlying his amazing actuality.
For example, in the essay Iqbal and Italy, written in , he focus his attention on the nature of the relations between Allama and Italy, trying to find out which would have been the argument of the conference hold by Iqbal in the Academy of Italy in Salierno underlines as in the discourse of Allama Iqbal there was a clear reference to the movement of Islam towards the West.
